CHESAPEAKE BAY GRANTS

AWARDED IN 2005

I. Informed Living Resource & Habitat Management ($312,500)

Wildlife Trust of North America - ($50,000 - '05) Continuing challenge grant to support the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center 's mission to demonstrate innovative practices. Note focus work on training community organization leaders to work with their members.

 

University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science - ($65,000 - '05) - General operating support and graduate fellowship support in tribute to Dr. Boesch's fifteen year tenure.

 

Estuarine Research Federation - ($2,500 -'05) Support the exchange of Chesapeake Bay related research at the Estuarine Research Federation Conference.

Virginia Institute of Marine Science - ($100,000 - '05) $50K to further support Dr. Luckenbach's oyster research; $50K to advance SAV restoration.

Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland - ($35,000 - '05) Support fishery conservation objectives, with a focus on menhaden and oyster policy.

Assateague Coastal Trust - ($10,000 - '05) Oyster Habitat Restoration support.

Chesapeake Research Consortium - ($50,000 - '05) Native Oyster Restoration Review.

 

II. Decreased Nutrients & Sediments ($1,476,494)

WATERKEEPERS -

Earthreports, Inc. - ($50,000 - '05) Successful completion of a challenge grant in support of the Patuxent Waterkeeper.

 

Potomac Riverkeeper, Inc. - ($15,000 - '05) Support for a new Shenandoah Waterkeeper.

Virginia Eastern SHOREKEEPER, Inc. - ($40,000 - '05) Successful completion of a challenge grant.

 

West/Rhode Riverkeeper, Inc. - ($50,000 - '05) Support the organization's inaugural year.

 

Waterkeeper Alliance - ($14,500 - '05) Support Chesapeake Leadership Institute, a training for Chesapeake Waterkeepers and their board members.

 

Waterkeeper Alliance - ($65,000 - '05) Support the Chesapeake Regional Waterkeeper Coordinator.

 

South River Federation - ($60,000 - '05) Successful completion of a challenge grant to support the South River Waterkeeper.

 

Potomac Riverkeeper, Inc. - ($25,000 grant/ $20,000 PRI - '05) Successful completion of a challenge grant/ long-term no interest loan for purchase of vessel.

 

Assateague Coastal Trust - ($25,000 - '05) Support the Coastkeeper program.

 

Chesapeake Rivers Association, Inc. - ($50,000 - '05) Support the Severn Riverkeeper program.


AGRICULTURE -

Virginia Tech - ($15,000 - '05) Develop a consensus based strategy to address the problem of excess livestock waste in the Shenandoah Valley (Virginia Waste Solutions Forum).

 

Chesapeake Bay Commission - ($50,000 - '05) Engage the agricultural community in the development of opportunities to expand funding for conservation programs on farms.

 

Chesapeake Research Consortium - ($5,000 -'05) Investigate barriers to removal of poultry litter from agricultural land by supporting research on possible arsenic impacts.

 

University of Maryland College Park Foundation - ($15,000 - '05) Develop recommendations to promote the long-term viability of Md Agriculture in an environmentally compatible manner.

 

Virginia Eastern SHOREKEEPER, Inc. - ($10,000 - '05) Address agriculture deep ditching.

 

University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. - ($120,000 - '05) Develop capacity to focus on service delivery barriers to address agriculture pollution and inadequate Chesapeake Bay funding.

 

Environmental Law Institute - ($20,000 - '05) Support an evaluation of Maryland tax policies that could assist agriculture nutrient reductions.

 

Lancaster County Conservation District - ($25,000 - '05) Investigate the economic and environmental viability of a gasification project to reduce nutrients from manure.

 

Environmental Defense - ($40,000 - '05) $25K to improve the Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan and $15K to support implementation of the Virginia Waste Solution Forum recommendations.

 

Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States, Inc. - ($50,000 - '05) General operational support, with interest noted in protecting streams, Potomac River flow, and agricultural buffers in Montgomery County.

 

MaryPIRG Foundation - ($5,000 - '05) Support a coalition of environmental organizations to work on agricultural runoff pollution.

 

Maryland Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. ($25,000 - '05) Investigate "poultry litter to energy" issues.

AIR -

National Wildlife Federation - ($26,580 - '05) Conduct outreach activities and prepare a report of the costs and benefits of Md. power plant upgrades.

 

Environmental Integrity Project - ($40,000 - '05) Analyze permits and investigate Clean Air violations at Md. power plants.

 

National Parks Conservation Association - ($82,000 - '05) General operational support with interest noted in clean air related activities in Maryland and in Virginia , and future national coalition building activities.

STORMWATER -

Pennsylvania Environmental Council - ($47,000 - '05) Support a model stormwater ordinance in Montour County , PA.

 

Chesapeake Bay Foundation - ($28,800 - '05) Strengthen stormwater regulatory actions relating to stormwater.

 

American Rivers - ($40,000 - '05) Support a polling and messaging stormwater project.

 

Center for Watershed Protection - ($50,000 - '05) Support of the 2005 Stormwater Institute.

Alliance for Community Education - ($20,000 - '05) General operational support with interest noted in Anne Arundel County stormwater education.

LIVING SHORELINES -


CBF/ Burke & Associates - ($88,456 - '05) Sponsor the development of a campaign to promote Living Shorelines by working with regulators, landowners, contractors and scientists.

 

Chesapeake Bay Trust - ($75,000 - '05) Continued partnership with CBT/NOAA/NFWF to issue Living Shoreline grants to watershed organizations, academia, homeowner associations, local governments, etc.

LAND PROTECTION -

1000 Friends of Maryland, Inc. - ($23,500 - '05) Support Partners for Open Space.

James River Association - ($50,790 - '05) Support environmentally sensitive development practices.

Eastern Shore Land Conservancy - ($20,000 - '05) General operational support with interest noted in implementation of regional land use agreements, and permanent protection through codes and ordinances.

 

1000 Friends of Maryland - ($10,000 - '05) General operational support.

The Izaak Walton League of America - ($10,000 - '05) General operational support.

SEPTICS -

Talbot County Department of Public Works - ($9,500 - '05) Promote the targeted installation of innovative septic systems through the creation of management districts.

Calvert County Department of Planning and Zoning - ($22,423 - '05) Support the targeted installation of nitrogen-removing septic systems in the Mill Creek Watershed.

STREAMS -

Stroud Water Research Center - ($37,945 - '05) Research the impact of Acid Mine Drainage streams.

III. Engaged Public ($2,505,610)

LEADERSHIP -

The Conservation Fund - ($50,000 - '05) Support the creation of a National Conservation Leadership Institute with the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and other partners.

 

Leadership Anne Arundel - ($3,500 - '05) Continue sponsorship of a candidate for local leadership development.

 

Chesapeake Research Consortium - ($7,500 - '05) Support additional fellowship career training.

 

YWCA-TWIN - ($610 - '05) Recognition for outstanding contributions of women working to restore the Bay: 2005 honoree - Carin Bisland, EPA.

CAPACITY BUILDING -

Nanticoke Watershed Alliance - ($10,000 - '05) Capacity building in Foundation's priority geographic region.

 

James River Association - ($25,000 - '05) Capacity building for transition year.

 

Chesapeake Bay Trust - ($100,000 - '05) Partnership with the Trust to provide capacity building grants to environmental organizations and Waterkeepers.

 

River Network - ($10,000 - '05) General operational support with interest noted in capacity building development of Waterkeepers and watershed organizations in the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Coastal Bay watersheds.

 

Chesapeake Bay Trust - ($2,500 - '05) Staff support for Bay Funders Network to explore development of an entity to enhance watershed organization capacity.

 

Chesapeake Bay Trust - ($3,000 - '05) Assist in the coordination of the Bay Funders Network.

 

The Nature Conservancy - ($72,500 - '05) Support Chesapeake Initiative - related to native oyster restoration, policy and enhanced funding in the areas of forest conservation, agriculture, air deposition, and freshwater linkages to the Bay.
 

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC -

Chesapeake Bay Foundation - ($1,000,000 - '05) - General operational support, park of a 6 year pledge for 40x2010 campaign.

 

Oyster Recovery Partnership - ($5,000 - '05) - Support DNR's effort to raise funds through marketing of bottled water.

 

Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund - ($105,000 - '05) - $75K to educate voters; ($50K was in response to a successful challenge grant); $25K for general operational support; and $5K to sponsor the Kabler annual dinner.

 

James River Association - ($50,000 - '05) Support the Healthy Rivers Alliance, a partnership of the James River Association, Friends of the Rappahannock, the Potomac Conservancy, and Friends of the Rivers of Virginia to conduct education and outreach among its citizens.

 

Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc. - ($2,000 - '05) Scholarship support.

MEDIA -

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay - ($14,000 - '05) For staff support of the Bay Journal .

 

Your Public Radio (WYPR) - ($10,000 - '05) Support "The Signal" programming to educate the public about issues affecting the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers.

 

Maryland Public Broadcasting Foundation, Inc. - ($25,000 - '05) Support Outdoors Maryland .

 

Maryland Public Television - ($10,000 - '05) Sponsor Chesapeake Bay Weekly.

 

Chesapeake Bay Foundation - ($1,000,000 - '05) - General operational support for communication delivery.
