CHESAPEAKE BAY GRANTS

I. Informed Living Resource & Habitat Management ($272,500)


The Nature Conservancy – ($72,500) Support Chesapeake Initiative – provide national expertise to Chesapeake Bay policy work on native oyster restoration, forest conservation, agriculture, and freshwater linkages to the Bay.


Wetlands Watch – ($30,000) Promote an innovative approach to wetlands conservation and protection through citizen intervention, producing a strong statewide network of wetlands advocacy organizations and individuals in Virginia.


Virginia Institute of Marine Science – ($50,000) Establish underwater grasses and build on the science of SAV restoration to understand the threats to expanding critical areas and habitat for crabs.


Virginia Institute of Marine Science – ($50,000) Continue the C. ariakensis and C. virginica field comparison study to evaluate the impact of the introduction of a non-native species.


Chesapeake Research Consortium – ($9,000) Support a forum for regional scientists and managers to identify commonalities in fish health deterioration, increase regional understanding, and lay the framework for eventual mitigation of causes.


Chesapeake Research Consortium – ($25,000) Year 2 partnership with NOAA to conduct a review of native oyster restoration activities, an effort designed to provide “lessons learned” to help guide future restoration funding.


Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland – ($35,000) Enhance conservation and advocacy efforts in CCA-MD to protect menhaden and oysters.


Coastal Conservation Association of Virginia – ($1,000) General Operational Support.

Chesapeake Rivers Association, Inc. – ($45,000) Support the Severn Riverkeeper program/ successful completion of a challenge grant.


West/ Rhode Riverkeeper, Inc. – ($50,000) Support the West/ Rhode Riverkeeper program/ successful completion of a challenge grant.


Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna, Inc. – ($30,000) General operational first-year support of the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper program.


Earthreports, Inc. – ($40,000) Support the Patuxent Riverkeeper/ successful completion of a challenge grant.


South River Federation – ($60,000) Support the South Riverkeeper/ successful completion of a challenge grant.


Virginia Eastern SHOREKEEPER, Inc. – ($25,000) Support the Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper program/ successful completion of a challenge grant.


Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper, Inc. – ($20,000) General operational first-year support.


Potomac Riverkeeper, Inc. – ($45,000) $30,000 - Support the Potomac Riverkeeper program/ successful completion of a challenge grant; $15,000 – Support the Shenandoah Riverkeeper.


Potomac Riverkeeper – ($20,000) Provide a $20,000 loan to secure a boat.


Waterkeeper Alliance – ($25,000) Support the Chesapeake Regional Waterkeeper Coordinator position.


Waterkeeper Alliance – ($20,000) Support new collaborative projects among the Chesapeake Waterkeepers for targeted advocacy, working on stormwater, wetlands protection, air pollution enforcement and critical areas reform.


 

AGRICULTURE - ($592,700)

American Farmland Trust – ($75,000) Support AFT in encouraging healthy farming practices and protecting productive farmland; improve and increase environmental stewardship among agricultural stakeholders.


Maryland Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. – ($25,000) Support an Agro-Ecology Fellowship, honoring Governor Harry Hughes.


Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States, Inc. – ($50,000) Support its advocacy mission in the Chesapeake Bay region.


Center for Agricultural Partnerships – ($24,000) Improve the delivery of technical assistance to farmers in the region, identify nutrient-reducing opportunities and organize field-based partnership programs.


Chester River Association – ($30,000) Support an on-the-ground farmer liaison to educate farmers on the different resources and revenue sources available through state and federal programs.


Chesapeake Bay Commission – ($38,400) – Support non-legislative efforts of their Agriculture Reform Project; support increased agricultural funding for the Chesapeake Bay region.


Chesapeake Research Consortium – ($27,800) Investigate implications of agricultural ditching on water quality and identify barriers to adoption of improved ditch management practices.


Environmental Defense – ($75,000) Work with partners to expand efforts to reduce agricultural run-off from row crop agriculture and livestock operations; transfer lessons learned from pilot programs to targeted areas.


Environmental Integrity Project – ($75,000) Advocate for increased and better enforcement of CAFO regulations; close loopholes in federal environmental laws to stop agribusinesses from avoiding responsibility for their pollution.


Ducks Unlimited – ($35,000) Support “Farm the Best, Conserve the Rest: Wetland

Conservation in the Chesapeake Bay”, aiming to restore large, continuous blocks of wildlife habitat by re-enrolling landowners into conservation agreements and providing new landowners with information on land protection options.


Shenandoah RC&D – ($12,500) Support a staff person to assist in the implementation of last year’s Waste Solutions Forum recommendations. Assist with the promotion of three educational events.


Chesapeake Bay Trust – ($100,000) Add support to a pooled Chesapeake Bay Funders Network Agricultural Funding Collaboration. Funding will be divided between projects that reduce manure and projects that improve technical assistance to farmers.


LEAD Maryland Foundation, Inc. – ($25,000) Expand the agricultural training for young farmers to include environmental matters in the curriculum, promoting responsible agricultural practices that ensure environmental sustainability.


AIR - ($235,000)

National Parks Conservation Association – ($100,000) General operational support with interest noted in clean air related activities in Maryland and in Virginia, and future national coalition building activities.


Environmental Integrity Project – ($65,000) Evaluate how effectively Maryland is meeting its responsibilities under the federal Clean Air Act and prepare recommendations for improvement to the state program.


Center for Public Interest Research – ($10,000) Support a dialogue between scientists, policy makers, the public and the media on the importance of addressing global warming. Work on a Climate Action Plan.


National Wildlife Federation – ($60,000) Develop and disseminate a report on the effects of global warming to the fish and wildlife of the Chesapeake region, including a list of recommended solutions. Engage networks of sportsmen and wildlife-oriented groups.


STORMWATER - ($188,000)

Chesapeake Bay Foundation – ($35,000) Strengthen stormwater regulatory actions by participating in MS4 and NPDES permit renewals. Improve knowledge and participation of regional watershed groups in local stormwater management.


James River Association – ($50,000) Work on sediment and erosion compliance from construction sites, improve stormwater permits and regulations in new and existing development, and examine the overall effectiveness of sediment and stormwater requirements to determine if current standards prevent degradation of waters.


Pennsylvania Environmental Council – ($65,000) Complete Phase II of the ACT 167 stormwater management plan in Montour County, providing post-construction stormwater control standards; work on the adoption of new municipal ordinances in Montour County consistent with the plan.


Herring Run Watershed Association – ($18,000) Support the Baltimore stormwater action coalition to establish a baseline of citizen knowledge about stormwater impacts in the Patapsco/ Back River Basin to create an effective messaging plan.


Potomac Conservancy – ($20,000) Work in Montgomery and Frederick Counties to address limitations in existing stormwater regulations and highlight the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of modern low-impact development techniques. The Potomac Conservancy will also work with land trust in West Virginia on land conservation.


LIVING SHORELINES - ($155,570)


Chesapeake Bay Trust
– ($75,000) Continued partnership with CBT/ NOAA/ NFWF to issue Living Shoreline grants to watershed organizations, academia, homeowner associations, local governments, etc.


CBF/ Burke & Association – ($80,570) Promote Living Shorelines by working with regulators, landowners, contractors and scientists; train shoreline managers and contractors on basic living shoreline treatment types; implement and document demonstration projects.


LAND PROTECTION - ($332,422)

1000 Friends of Maryland – ($20,000) Support Reality Check, a statewide visioning exercise with participants looking at anticipated population and job growth and the associated development on the economic, social, infrastructure and environmental systems.


National Center for Smart Growth – ($26,000) Help sponsor the four Maryland Reality Check workshops in May and June 2006; identify policy changes that will be needed to change trends identified by participants.


James River Association – ($39,422) Follow-up from a project examining the development codes and ordinances of all 45 major counties and cities of the James River watershed. Phase II will communicate scores and recommendations to the elected officials and planning staff of those 45 jurisdictions and at workshops and meetings. One locality will be targeted for a focused effort.


University System of Maryland Foundation – ($12,000) – Support the Summit on the Comprehensive Effects of Development on Water Quality.


Ducks Unlimited – ($25,000) Convene national and regional experts to develop a consensus “full-cost accounting” report on the full impact of land development on water quality, including impervious surface area, vehicle emissions, etc.


Eastern Shore Land Conservancy – ($75,000) Support ESLC to expand their capacity in a strategic way to address the enormous growth issues facing the Eastern Shore of Maryland, working with local governments on land use/ development decisions.


1000 Friends of Maryland – ($25,000) Support Partners for Open Space – increase the visibility and highlight the benefits of Program Open Space, and increase and maintain support for land conservation throughout the State of Maryland.


1000 Friends of Maryland – ($40,000) Conduct a statewide poll with extensive county level data, in support of “Smarter Growth for Maryland”, raising the prominence of growth and its impacts.


Environment Maryland Research and Policy Center – ($31,000) Expand “Smarter Growth for Maryland” to a coalition involving fifty new groups; facilitate common priorities among members.


National Center for Smart Growth – ($39,000) Conduct an analysis of Maryland land use policies compared with other states to develop recommendations of policy changes needed to achieve smarter growth.

STREAMS - ($40,000)

Stroud Water Research Center – ($40,000) Support research investigating the role of acid mine stream mitigation in reducing nutrient levels to the Chesapeake Bay.

 

III. Engaged Public ($2,505,610)

LEADERSHIP - ($219,900)

National League of Conservation Voters Education Fund – ($90,000) Support the Chesapeake Environmental Leadership Institute (Class of 2007 and 2008) – to build a network of leaders with a shared strategic framework that will help deepen the public’s commitment to protect our air, water, land, health and wildlife.


Chesapeake Bay Foundation – ($67,500) Support the beginning phases of development of an environmental leadership center.


Leadership Anne Arundel – ($6,500) $4,000 - Support the tuition for an up and coming environmental leader in the community; $1,500 – co-sponsor the Environmental Session for the 2007 Flagship Class.


YWCA-TWIN – ($900) Honor an outstanding woman in the environmental and scientific community.


The Conservation Fund – ($50,000) Support a National Conservation Leadership Institute for leaders in fish and wildlife conservation and management, developing a new generation of conservation leaders representing the government, non-profit, and corporate communities.


Chesapeake Research Consortium – ($5,000) Support additional training in the Chesapeake Bay Program Fellowship program.

 

CAPACITY BUILDING - ($423,000)

Environmental Grantmakers Association – ($10,000) Support the EGA Fall Retreat, bringing EGA members together to collaborate and learn from one-another.


Chesapeake Bay Trust – ($8,000) Assist in the coordination and staffing of the Chesapeake Bay Funders’ Network.


Restore American Estuaries – ($20,000) Perform a review and analysis of information and current status of existing restoration initiatives, investigating a possible a National Estuary Coalition.


Everglades Foundation Benefit – ($25,000) Support the First Annual Everglades Foundation Benefit.


Environmental Fund for Maryland – ($5,000) Support the Environmental Fund in their efforts to expand workplace payroll contributions to environmental organizations.


Chester River Association – ($5,000) Provide staff support to the volunteer Sassafras River Association.


1000 Friends of Maryland – ($10,000) General Operational Support, to build the capacity and strength of 1000 Friends of Maryland to achieve their mission of a statewide vision for growth, development and conservation.


Chesapeake Bay Trust – ($200,000) $100,000 earmarked for year 2 of 3 of the CBT/ KCF Capacity building partnership; $100,000 to support the Chesapeake Bay Funders’ Network new Capacity Building Program.


The Wildfowl Trust of North America, Inc. – ($50,000) Expand the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center’s ability to raise funds for restoration, targeted research and education/ outreach.


Nanticoke Watershed Alliance – ($10,000) General operational support to assist with the organization’s strategic planning process. The Alliance is a consortium of environmental organizations, farmers, academics, business, public agencies and land trusts.


Izaak Walton League of America – ($10,000) General Operational Support to support their goal of strengthen partnerships in the sporting community and expanding outreach to involve more citizens in conservation decision making.


Institute for Conservation Leadership – ($20,000) Support the Mid-Atlantic Complete Fundraiser Program – work with ~20 Chesapeake organizations to increase their total income, diversify their funding base and develop effective fundraising strategies.


University System of Maryland Foundation, Inc. – ($50,000) Provide discretionary funds to support opportunities that arise before the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science during the coming year.

 

 

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC - ($2,381,500)

Chesapeake Bay Foundation – ($2,000,000) General operational support, part of a 6 year pledge for 40x2010 campaign to increase communications and outreach.


Chesapeake Bay Foundation – ($40,000) Support a coordinated curriculum development initiative, developing a model Bay education program to be used to meet national education standards while adding value to student achievement.


James River Association – ($50,000) Support the Healthy Rivers Initiative, a 30-member partnership including the James River Association, Friends of the Rappahannock, the Potomac Conservancy, and Friends of the Rivers of Virginia to conduct education and outreach on the cost of restoring and protecting our waterways.


Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund – ($105,000) $75,000 for general operational support, expanding their capacity; $25,000 to host the Legislative Summit and support education and outreach (update a “Citizen’s Guide to Civic Participation”); and a $5,000 sponsorship for the annual Kabler dinner.


Center for Watershed Protection – ($50,000) Provide general operational support to a national organization, providing them the flexibility to respond to requests of technical assistance and training for local watershed organizations.


Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen’s Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc. – ($3,000) Support a scholarship fund, dedicated to our region’s anglers.


Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen’s Association – Perry Hall Chapter – ($1,000) General Operational Support.


Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation – ($2,500) Support the 5th Annual Banquet and Auction.


Green Corps – ($15,000) Support a Mid-Atlantic Regional Expansion Program to train young leaders in the skills of environmental organizing and advocacy. This project works to increase civic engagement, strengthen the region’s environmental movement, and highlight the regional environmental groups.


EarthJustice – ($30,000) Address stronger stormwater measures in DC, providing a model for other stormwater control programs; Work on enforcement of the Clean Air Act to cut nitrogen oxide emissions and mercury from power plants.


Maryland Department of Natural Resources – ($2,000) Support an Upper Potomac Roundtable Conference to bring together citizens and governmental leaders to develop a coordinated tributary strategy.


Virginia League of Conservation Voters Education Fund – ($78,000) $30,000 general operational support to support their mission of raising community awareness of conservation issues and increasing citizen participation; $48,000 to effectively bring conservation issues into the public debate and improve ability to support conservation priorities.


Alliance for Community Education – ($5,000) Support development of a DVD demonstrating innovative methods residents, students and leaders can take in reducing urban stormwater runoff.


MEDIA - ($109,500)

Maryland Public Broadcasting Foundation, Inc. – ($35,000) Produce a 30-minute segment on the hidden and unseen impacts of stormwater on the Bay and local streams.


Your Public Radio (WYPR) – ($15,000) Support “The Signal” programming to educate the public about issues affecting the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers, and provide environmental programming during peak drive times.


Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay – ($59,500) Enhance the coverage of The Bay Journal and expand its outreach to address local issues; Develop a syndication service to distribute articles throughout the watershed.
